Defying Gravity

I fell into a black hole of work where nothing but the sound of perpetual button clicking endured! The weekend allowed me to resurface and I took the chance to follow up on an old project.

The challenge was a long abandoned bird necklace. One of my first lessons in jewellery making was understanding that what you draw will have to abide by the merciless laws of gravity.

This meant that a design that seemed to be a great idea, turned into a sagging tangled mess.

Eventually, I settled on a shape that works. The loops that connect the chain to the birds will have to be smaller in the final version.

This necklace could be paired with these gravity defying earrings with which I have had a similar battle.

However, that battle still rages on..who knew that people come in such a wide variety of ears! So I'm looking for a more general solution to keep them flying.

This could be a perfect excuse for a trip to the Tokyo jewellery fair to source some clever backing supplies :)
